History of the Fire Mark

The Great fire of London in 1666 marked a turning point in attitudes towards the hazard of fire. Like minded property owners pooled resources to provide their own insurance protection with organised teams of fire fighters.

As houses and business premises did not always have numbers or street names, the insurance 'companies' produced their own signs to attach to buildings - these were called Fire Marks.

Originally brightly painted, these marks were made in a variety of materials, including lead, copper and tin.

The first fire insurance companies started in London in 1683. Bristol became the second City to offer insurance with the Bristol Crown fire office opening for business in 1718.

FPS has created a small museum at it's Bristol factory, appertaining to fire fighting memorabilia - including fire marks, hand grenades, buckets, hoses, extinguishers and related items, all of which offer an insight into the early years of fire protection.

With this in mind, FPS considered the new range of extinguishers to be worthy of a name which reflects a strong and traditional link to fire fighting and protection. So, as during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, fire marks gave their owners peace of mind against the threat of fire - the Firemark range of extinguishers provide an ongoing defence against the same threat today and into the 21st century.

The ongoing changes, coupled with improved efficiency, have enabled the company to compete on a world-wide basis, with quality products at competitive prices.
